Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Get ready, Washington State Women Deer Hunters! This year, “Hunter Pink” has become the new orange! The Washington State  House of Representative added fluorescent pink as an option in Senate Bill (ESSB) 5148. The bill passed in February and Governor Jay Inslee signed it on April 10, 2019. Senator Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver introduced the bill. Senator Wilson got the idea while undergoing breast cancer treatments. So come this October, you’ll see more women wear pink. As you many know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are Senator Wilson is a hunter herself.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), hunter injuries and incidents were greatly reduced since hunter orange was introduced as a requirement (1). Fluorescent or “blaze pink” is

considered as equally visible to hunter orange in the wild. It is important to note, that there are many hunting regulations to be aware of. Seasons vary per location. If you’re lucky enough to be able to hunt in the Okanogan Highlands, we have many opportunities to hunt for deer, wild turkey, and predatory animals. In our area alone, we have both White-Tailed Deer as well as Mule Deer. The following is some of our hunting seasons:

Modern Firearm
Mule Deer (October 12 – October 22)
White-Tailed Deer (October 12 – October 22)

Archery
Mule Deer (September 1 – September 27)
White-Tailed Deer (September 1 – September 27)
White-Tailed Deer (November 21 – December 15)
If you were born after  Jan 1, 1972, WDFW requires that you complete a hunter education program. There is no minimum age however, if you are under 12 years old, you must be accompanied by a guardian. After the season, WDFW also require you report your hunting activity via this report.
This is a requirement even if you weren’t able to bag a deer or turkey.
